SolidarMed, in partnership with Zambia’s Ministry of Health, is expanding a decentralized nurse training program to all provinces by 2026, aiming to double student intake. This initiative highlights the need for safe, conducive learning environments, including suitable student accommodations near training schools. Ubuntu Homes is supporting the effort by providing quality hostels to meet current and future needs. A needs assessment survey has outlined hostel requirements, though data verification is pending, presenting both challenges and opportunities for Ubuntu Homes. Below is a table of training school sites with unverified accommodation gaps based on 44-bed and proposed 22-bed hostel designs.

Environmental Sustainability Initiatives

At Ubuntu Homes, environmental sustainability is paramount. We are dedicated to reducing our carbon footprint and promoting eco-friendly practices. Through the integration of solar solutions into our housing solutions, we provide clean energy to our tenants while minimizing electricity costs and greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, we prioritise the use of eco-friendly building materials and energy-efficient designs throughout our operations to further minimise environmental impact.

Continuously striving to enhance our sustainability efforts, we closely monitor energy consumption, waste management practices, and carbon emissions. By taking proactive steps to minimise our environmental footprint, we not only contribute to a healthier planet but also create healthier living environments for our communities. We are committed to building a sustainable future where people and the planet thrive together.

Our Model

Our Model

Our social housing rental model focuses on building, renovating, and renting out houses and student hostels at affordable rates. Housing rent is set below 30% of our tenants’ income, aligning with the international standard for affordability. This ensures our housing solutions remain accessible and sustainable.

The income generated from these rentals, along with student accommodation provided at market rates, is reinvested into maintaining existing properties and constructing new units. This integrated approach allows us to continuously expand our capacity and improve living conditions for medical staff and students in rural areas.
